Childhood in Tiruchuzhi

Childhood in Tiruchuzhi

Venkataraman was born in the small village of Tiruchuzhi in Tamil Nadu. His early years were marked by an ordinary childhood, though signs of his spiritual nature were already present.

The Self is always present. It is we who are absent.

Venkataraman was born on 30 December 1879 in the village of Tiruchuzhi, in Tamil Nadu. His father, Sundaram Iyer, was a pleader who was known in the village for his upright conduct and learning. His mother, Alagammal, managed the household and cared for the family with attention and discipline. The family lived in modest circumstances and was respected in the local community.

As a boy, Venkataraman was noted for the depth of his sleep. When he slept, he was entirely unaware of his surroundings. Friends would lift him, carry him to other places, or play tricks on him, yet he would remain undisturbed. Even loud noises failed to wake him, and he would continue sleeping as though nothing had happened.

At school, he did not show particular interest in studies. His performance was ordinary, and he was neither praised nor reprimanded for scholarship. What held his attention more were physical activities. He enjoyed games, wrestling, and outdoor play, and was known for his strength and fearlessness among boys of his age.

Though outwardly absorbed in play, he was respectful in manner. He showed regard for elders and displayed a natural seriousness at times. When passing temples or encountering holy men, he behaved with quiet reverence, without drawing attention to himself.

During these early years, there was nothing in his outward life to set him apart from other boys growing up in similar surroundings.
