Learning Tamil

Though the young sage was born in Tamil Nadu, he had to learn to read and write Tamil properly to communicate with devotees and to compose his spiritual works.

Language is a tool to point to the Self, but the Self is beyond all words.

Venkataraman had received some education in English and Telugu, but his knowledge of Tamil was limited. When devotees began to come and ask questions, he realized the need to learn Tamil properly to communicate with them.

He learned Tamil by reading spiritual texts and by listening to devotees. His natural intelligence and the clarity of his Self-realization made learning easy. Soon, he was able to read and write Tamil fluently.

This knowledge of Tamil enabled him to compose his spiritual works, including the "Five Hymns to Arunachala" and "Who Am I?" - texts that have inspired countless seekers around the world. His mastery of the language allowed him to express the inexpressible with remarkable clarity and beauty.
