Meditation and Self-Inquiry
Ramana Maharshi taught that meditation should be on the Self, not on external objects. The best meditation is self-inquiry, which leads directly to the Self.
Ramana Maharshi taught that meditation should be on the Self, not on external objects or concepts. The best form of meditation is self-inquiry, which leads directly to the Self. In self-inquiry, one meditates on the source of the "I" thought, which is the Self.
Other forms of meditation, such as focusing on a mantra or an image, can be helpful, but they are indirect. Self-inquiry is direct because it goes straight to the source. It is meditation on the Self by the Self.
The practice of self-inquiry can be done at any time, in any posture. It does not require special preparation or conditions. One simply asks "Who am I?" and abides in the source of the "I" thought. This is the highest form of meditation.
