The Train Journey
The journey from Madurai to Tiruvannamalai was not just a physical journey, but a spiritual pilgrimage that would culminate in the young sage's arrival at his destined abode.
After leaving Madurai, Venkataraman travelled by train toward Tiruvannamalai. During the journey, he removed the sacred thread he was wearing and also cut off the tuft of hair on his head. These were left behind along the way. He continued the journey without carrying any belongings.
On reaching Tiruvannamalai, he went directly to the temple of Arunachaleswara. Entering the vast temple precincts, he passed through the corridors and reached the thousand-pillared hall. There he sat down quietly, without choosing a particular place or posture.
He remained seated for long periods, unmoving and silent. He did not appear to be aware of hunger, thirst, or the passing of time. His attention did not turn outward, and he showed no response to what was happening around him.
Temple priests and devotees noticed the young boy sitting there day after day. Some attempted to speak to him or move him, but he did not respond. As time passed, his body showed signs of neglect, and insects gathered around him.
Eventually, those who saw his condition intervened and began to protect him from further harm. He was moved from place to place within the temple precincts, though he remained largely indifferent to his surroundings.
Thus began his life at Arunachala, lived quietly within the temple, without intention or announcement.
