Meeting Seshadri Swami
Seshadri Swami, another great sage living at Arunachala, recognized the young Venkataraman's spiritual state and protected him during his early days at the mountain.
Seshadri Swami was already living at Arunachala and was known in the temple for his unusual behaviour. He moved freely through the precincts, speaking little and acting according to his own ways. Temple workers and devotees were familiar with him and generally left him undisturbed.
One day, he noticed the young man sitting motionless in the temple hall. He observed him closely for some time. Seeing that he remained unmoving and silent, Seshadri Swami began to take an interest in him.
From then on, he would often remain nearby. When people gathered out of curiosity or attempted to disturb the young man, Seshadri Swami would drive them away. At times, he spoke sharply to those who came too close. He appeared determined that no one should trouble him.
He also attended to practical needs. When food was required, he would see that it was brought. When the young man was moved from one place to another within the temple, Seshadri Swami accompanied him, keeping watch.
During this period, the two were often seen in the same areas of the temple. One remained silent and still, while the other moved about, guarding the space around him.
Those who witnessed these scenes remembered them clearly, though at the time they passed without remark.
