The Founding of Ramanasramam
After his mother's passing, Ramanasramam was established at the site of her samadhi. This would become the permanent home of Ramana Maharshi and a center for spiritual seekers.
After Alagammal's passing and interment at the foot of Arunachala, devotees began to build structures around her samadhi. This marked the beginning of Ramanasramam, which would become the permanent home of Ramana Maharshi and a center for spiritual seekers from around the world.
Initially, the ashram was very simple - just a few structures to accommodate the sage and his devotees. But as more people came, the ashram grew. Ramana Maharshi himself had no interest in building an institution, but he allowed devotees to develop the ashram as they saw fit.
Ramanasramam became a place where seekers could come and be in the presence of the sage, absorbing his silent teaching. It continues to this day as a center for the study and practice of his teachings.
