The Mother's Arrival

Ramana Maharshi's mother, Alagammal, came to Arunachala after hearing about her son's transformation. She too would eventually attain Self-realization.

The Self is the true mother and father of all.

After hearing about her son's transformation, Alagammal came to Arunachala to see him. Initially, she tried to persuade him to return home, but soon she realized that her son had undergone a profound transformation. She began to see him not just as her son, but as a great sage.

Gradually, Alagammal herself was drawn to the spiritual path. She began to practice self-inquiry and meditation under her son's guidance. Her devotion and sincerity were so great that she too attained Self-realization.

When she passed away, it was in a state of complete Self-realization. Her body was interred at the foot of Arunachala, and this spot later became the site of Ramanasramam. The mother who had given birth to the body of the sage had herself realized the Self.
