Life at Skandashram

Life at Skandashram

After moving to Skandashram, Ramana Maharshi lived with his mother and close devotees in a simple, spiritual environment that became a model for ashram life.

The ashram is not a place, but a state of being.

After spending several years at Virupaksha Cave, Ramana Maharshi moved to Skandashram, a small ashram higher up on the slopes of Arunachala. Here, his mother Alagammal came to live with him, along with a few close devotees.

Life at Skandashram was simple and austere. The small group lived in harmony with nature, depending on the offerings of visitors for their sustenance. Ramana Maharshi would spend long hours in meditation, and devotees would sit with him, absorbing the peace and silence.

It was here that his mother attained liberation, passing away in a state of complete Self-realization. Her body was interred at the foot of Arunachala, and this spot later became the site of Ramanasramam. The period at Skandashram was marked by the arrival of many sincere seekers from all over India.
