The Guru points to the Self. Follow the Guru's guidance, and the Self will be revealed.

Ramana Maharshi taught that the Guru is essential for Self-realization. The Guru's role is not to give something new to the disciple, but to point the disciple to the Self, which is already present. The Guru helps to remove the obstacles that prevent the disciple from recognizing the Self.

The Guru can be external or internal. The external Guru is a realized being who points to the internal Guru, which is the Self. When the disciple follows the Guru's guidance and practices self-inquiry, the internal Guru is revealed.

The relationship between Guru and disciple is one of grace. The Guru's grace helps to remove obstacles and to reveal the Self. But the disciple must also make the effort to practice and to follow the Guru's guidance. Both grace and effort are necessary.
